Netherlands: International Perspectives on Sexuality and Gender
Coursework
Coursework begins with a strong foundation in critical theory of sexuality and gender. All students attend the guest lecture series, which is presented by academics, service professionals and grassroots activists. The range of disciplines includes political science, anthropology, women’s studies, homo studies, sociology, and sexology.
Students choose to continue intensive study within one of the following modules:
Critical Theory - feminist, queer, modern and post-modern theories
Use theory as a way to better understand and analyze issues of sexuality and gender identity as experienced in the world.
Tolerance and Sexual health education
Focus on the various forms that tolerance and sexual health education can take, looking at Dutch and other experiences. Examine different models of sexual health education and the overlap with tolerance education for sexual, ethnic and religious minorities.
Filmmaking with a sexuality and gender lens (fall semester only)
Students who intend to create a short film project as their Independent Study Project will work with a professional filmmaker throughout the semester. Discuss and practice basic filmmaking techniques as well as discuss the particular challenges of filmmaking on issues of sexuality and/or gender.
