Faculty and Staff
Said Graiouid, Academic Director
Said Graiouid earned a BA in English and an MA in Comparative Literature and Critical Theory from University Mohammed V in Rabat, and a PhD in Communication and Cultural Studies from the University of Surrey, UK. A native of El-Jadida, a coastal town in the south of Casablanca, Morocco, Said followed an intercultural journey, including Fulbright study in Austin, Texas, as well as his academic experiences above. Beyond its academic fulfilment, his experience sensitized him to the subtle and dynamic ways in which cultures and identities compete and interact. He is also well prepared for the task of cultural translation and mediation between alternative value systems and structures.
Since 1986, Said has served as a Professor of Communication and Cultural Studies at University Mohammed V, where he has designed, coordinated and taught undergraduate and graduate courses. He has also been a founding faculty of the Communication Studies Program at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane and The Institute for Language and Communication Studies in Rabat. He is the Head of the Research Group on Migration and Culture; a member of the Research Unit on Culture and Development, University Mohammed V; and an Associate Research Fellow with the Smart Lab Centre (Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London Institute) and the Africa Network Group (Sterling University, UK). He has written extensively on Moroccan culture, communication, media and cultural politics. His articles are published in a number of referee journals and as chapters in edited books. He is currently working on a book on Migrancy and Cultural Politics in Morocco.
