Chile: Economic Development and Globalization
Program Highlights
Learn Theory and See Its Application

This program includes discussion about economic and development theory with experts, and students are asked to analyze these concepts. From there, students are also invited to see theories in application – when on excursion, students see for themselves how theories are applied and where their strengths and weaknesses lie.
Explore Industries on All Scales

Globalization affects many layers of Chile’s economy – from Chilean companies with multinational connections to small-scale cooperatives and micro-enterprises. Students examine industries of all types and on all scales, thereby internalizing the broad influence of the global market and the complexity of global policy issues.
Investigate Social and Policy Implications
With each experience, students are exposed to the social aspects of industrial growth. In some cases, development leads to empowerment and improved conditions; in others, the case is much the opposite. Students also address the role of policy in addressing social concerns, including discussions with government officials and other policy influencers.
Choose from Diverse Research Topics for ISP
Former students have selected a vast range of topics to research: the role of the state in agricultural development, value-added production in the forest industry, economic restructuring within Mapuche communities, and the essence of the free trade agreement between Chile and the USA. Even though students (with the advice of the Academic Director) can choose to work within a multitude of interesting topics, the program also encourages students to build on former investigations in order to develop more profound research.
