About Health, Safety, and Security

Students drawing water from a well in India.

Every school and study abroad program takes the health, safety and security of students into account while designing and delivering every program component. SIT Study Abroad recognizes that advisors and faculty will want to review materials that specifically address these issues and the links on this page will direct you to the most useful information. If there is a need for additional information at any time, please contact our office.

Health, safety and security is a shared responsibility between the student, the parent, the home school and SIT Study Abroad. It is helpful when schools partner with us in advising students that adherence to SIT policies and direction in-country are the key to a safe and healthy semester. In our experience, students who are reminded that they are still subject to their home school's code of conduct, if dually enrolled, tend to take more responsibility for their personal and academic performance. We appreciate any emphasis you might add during your predeparture orientation and even throughout the student's semester abroad.

SIT students undergo a comprehensive orientation upon arrival at each SIT program site, including a session with an in-country medical professional. There is an on-going focus on safety and health issues throughout the semester, particularly when students change locations and go on excursion.

Health Guidelines

SIT provides students with country-specific health guidelines during the pre-departure process.  These should be reviewed with parents, as well as the student's medical care provider, or a local travel clinic.

Student Health Insurance

SIT includes health, accident and evacuation insurance in all program fees. Students are not allowed to opt out of this insurance.  We also encourage students to maintain their regular or existing health insurance during the program.

Emergency Communication

SIT Study Abroad has 24 hour on-call staff for program and student emergencies, as well as for handling emergency communications from a school or family to their student abroad.  We have procedures for sharing information with schools and parents, and they will vary depending on the type of incident or emergency. We ask that advisors and faculty communicate with their University Relations Manager whenever possible regarding incidents and emergencies. We recognize that home school advisors often have background knowledge and a relationship with students and parents that can be helpful. We also recognize that you may have institutional requirements to report on situations involving your students. We strive first to effectively deal with program and student emergencies and second to share information that balances the needs of everyone - the students, parents, home schools, and our local program staff and community.
