How to Request Accommodations
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a person with a qualifying disability is anyone who:
- has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of such person's major life activities (such as caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working),
- has a record of such an impairment or,
- is regarded as having such an impairment
Students who wish to access accommodations at SIT Graduate Institute must contact the DSS office and submit written documentation of their disability. This documentation must be provided by a qualified professional, and should include, at a minimum, the following:
- Specific diagnosis of the disability
- Specific evidence of the disability, including any tests or other evaluations performed and results
- Impact of the disability on the person’s functioning (functional limitations)
- Recommendations for adjustments/accommodations
(Please note: Additional information may be requested.)
Documentation should be current, ideally no more than three years old. Requests for reasonable accommodations are reviewed and approved by the Director of Student Services. Information about an individual’s disability is considered confidential and is not revealed by DSS to others without the person’s consent.
If you have questions related to your own personal situation, we invite you to contact the DSS Office for further information and a discussion about your concerns. The programs at SIT Graduate Institute will take you on an exciting and challenging odyssey, and DSS is here to provide guidance and assistance as you navigate these academic waters. We wish you all the best!
