Summer Program Offers a 'Sweet' Way to Explore European Culture

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (June 28, 2010) -- Do the bright colors and fresh flavors of Italian gelato reflect the vibrancy of Italian culture? Is it possible to learn about French culture through chocolate?

Starting this week, high school students participating in The Experiment in International Living's newest programs—Italy: La Dolce Vita and France: Summer of Chocolate—will explore firsthand whether these foods provide insight into the people and culture of Italy and France.

The Experiment in International Living, an educational program of World Learning, will send more than 800 American high school students abroad to 30 countries this summer. For three, four, or five weeks, students travel in small groups and immerse themselves in a new culture through home stays with local families, community service, language study, ecology, the arts, cooking, or outdoor adventure.

"The Experiment's compelling programs foster meaningful connections across linguistic and cultural barriers," said Chris Frantz, the program's deputy director. "Students not only gain self-confidence and valuable international experience, but they develop an understanding of themselves and the world around them."

In addition to the new programs in France and Italy, The Experiment in International Living is offering two new arts programs. In Peru, students will meet local artists, dancers and musicians to learn about the country’s artistic heritage, while in Spain students will work with a Spanish painter and art historian to learn about artists such as Picasso, Dali, and Gaudi.

The Experiment in International Living is a leader in the field of international cross-cultural education, with more than 70,000 participants since the program’s founding in 1932.
