Conference Showcases SIT Graduate Students’ Research

BRATTLEBORO, VT (May 19, 2010) -- The Brattleboro community is invited to attend the SIT Graduate Institute's annual Sandanona Conference next week, featuring the 2010 graduating class from the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Program.

Graduate students from across the globe will present their research on issues ranging from the challenges that Iraqi refugees face in language classrooms to how second language teaching techniques can benefit children with ADHD. The 2010 graduating class includes students from nine countries: Iraq, Zimbabwe, Russia, Nepal, South Africa, United States, South Korea, Namibia and China.

WHAT:    Sandanona Conference
WHERE:  SIT Graduate Institute, Kipling Road, Brattleboro, Vt.
WHEN:    May 24-26, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
RSVP:      natalia.turketi@mail.sit.edu

Keynote speakers include Muchumayeli Ishmael Bhebhe, associate professor at Zimbabwe Open University, Jessamyn Embry, an English as an additional language teacher from Lyme, Connecticut, and Sarah Christensen, a high school Spanish/English language learner teacher from San Francisco.

Graduate students in the master’s program complete intense coursework from September to May, as well as a teaching internship or practicum during the year. For nearly 30 years, the Sandanona Conference has provided students with the opportunity to present their work prior to graduation and demonstrate what they have learned to the wider community.

The conference takes its name from the Abnaki word for “place of great light,” the same name that the Native Americans gave to the hillside where World Learning’s headquarters in Brattleboro now sits. Learn more or register for a session.
