World Learning/SIT Co-Sponsor Heifer Stroll Sustainability Events

World Learning is joining with organizations and businesses across Vermont to support sustainable local agriculture through the 10th-annual Strolling of the Heifers. In addition to co-sponsoring the weekend events June 4-6 in Brattleboro, World Learning will co-sponsor two films about global sustainability and host a roundtable discussion leading up to the June 5 parade.
"World Learning and SIT are thrilled to co-sponsor Strolling of the Heifers on its 10th anniversary," said World Learning President and CEO Adam Weinberg. "This exciting event is consistent with World Learning’s commitment to promote the livelihoods of family farmers locally and globally, as embodied by our SIT Farm and Sustainable Agriculture Initiative."
World Learning is partnering with Brattleboro Climate Protection and Strolling of the Heifers to present the two-film series on campus in the Rotch Building, room 108-109. A Sea Change, a documentary about ocean acidification by Barbara Ettinger and Sven Huseby, will be shown Wednesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. Taking Root: the Vision of Wangari Maathai will be presented Thursday, May 27, at 7 p.m. This documentary by Lisa Merton and Alan Dater tells the inspiring story of the Green Belt Movement in Kenya. Maathai, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is a World Learning trustee emerita. The filmmakers will be present at both showings to discuss the films and answer questions.

World Learning will also host a Slow Money roundtable discussion focused on investing in local food systems Friday, June 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Stephen and Nita Lowey International Center. Slow Money is a new nonprofit organization founded by investment and philanthropy pioneer Woody Tasch. The group works to build local and national networks, and develop new financial products and services geared to investing in small food enterprises, connecting investors to their local economies, and building the nurture capital industry. To RSVP for the discussion, email mailto:carriewalker50@gmail.com
Billed as one of Vermont's top 10 summer events, the Strolling of the Heifers has grown from a local parade to an ongoing initiative including grants to schools and the creation of the Microloan Fund for New England Farmers. The event attracts more than 45,000 attendees annually.
Participants in SIT Graduate Institute’s Conflict Transformation Across Cultures Summer Peacebuilding Institute will march in the parade. The participants hail from more than 40 countries including Sudan, Pakistan, and El Salvador. SIT Farm will have a booth promoting sustainable agriculture at the Strolling of the Heifers Green Expo on June 5 from 9 am to 3 pm. For more information on individual events, please log on to Strolling of the Heifers.
