Brattleboro, Vermont, USA

Map of Brattleboro region

Although the business and cultural heart of Brattleboro beats just three miles from the SIT campus, the spirit of this progressive, stimulating community pervades all its neighborhoods. Home to an eclectic mix of native Vermonters and people who have relocated from all over the world, this cosmopolitan town serves as southeastern Vermont’s undisputed cultural recreational, and economic center.

Brattleboro’s downtown - a classic Main Street and its arteries -  is a walkable, shoppable, and relaxing center. Probably no town its size offers as many book and music stores, art and photography galleries, an award-winning food co-op, restaurants and cafes of variety and quality, a library that ranks tops in the state - linking the community to information resources all over the world, a restored theater for movies and live action, a music center that is truly world-class, and a museum that made history last year with an exclusive Andy Warhol exhibit. Brattleboro is also host to the annual Women’s Film Festival, a fall Literary Festival, a world ski-jump competition, and the local Strolling of the Heifers - a long weekend’s worth of celebrating our agricultural roots - including a newsmaking parade like none you’ve ever seen.

Culture also includes sporting activity, and Brattleboro is a hub for skiing, hiking, river rafting, canoeing and kayaking, and lots more. SIT students can enjoy some of these right on campus or, for wider horizons, make the short trip to the nearby Center and Rotch Learning Center draw people from the surrounding area to lively day and evening presentations, with speakers from all over the country and the world addressing local, national, and international issues of concern to all.

Add to the mix Brattleboro’s homemade chocolates, home brew, and some of the finest boutique-roasted coffee anywhere in the world, and you’ve a town worth living in.
