Top Environmentalist to Address Social & Environmental Justice Conference
BRATTLEBORO, VT (April 22, 2010) -- Environmentalist Bill McKibben is among the notable speakers and performers who will participate in the Social & Environmental Justice Conference in Brattleboro May 1. The conference is organized by SIT Graduate Institute students and faculty and members of the Brattleboro community.
McKibben, who will deliver the conference's keynote address, was among the first to warn of the dangers of global warming. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including his latest titled Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet, and is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, Mother Jones, Rolling Stone and Outside.
Other speakers include:
Ed Gavagan, a nationally-renowned storyteller who is frequently featured on National Public Radio and the Moth Mainstage. Gavagan was the 2007 Moth GrandSLAM Champion.
Margaret Bruchac, a scholar, performer, and historical consultant. She focuses on the complex histories, images, cultures, and oral traditions of northeastern Native Americans from the colonial era to the present.
Anne Potter, the director of the Austine School for the Deaf in Brattleboro and the statewide American Sign Language Program. Potter's presentation will include storytelling and poetry. The entire conference will be ASL interpreted.
