SIT Study Abroad Cosponsors Second Annual Undergraduate Research Conference on Human Development with Notre Dame
BRATTLEBORO (April 1, 2010) -- Forty-five former SIT Study Abroad students from more than 30 different institutions of higher education presented their research at the 2010 Human Development Conference, People, Power, and Pragmatism: The Future of Development in Our Changing World, (February 26 and 27), on Notre Dame’s campus in Indiana. Sponsored by the Ford Family Program in Human Development Studies and Solidarity at Notre Dame’s Kellogg Institute for International Studies, the conference was cosponsored by Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concerns and SIT Study Abroad.
Bringing together students and faculty from across the country, the student-led conference aimed to advance research and dialogue on human rights and development topics, including in the areas of environmental studies, youth, women, and education. A documentary film produced by SIT Bolivia student, Tyler Depke (Hope College), addressing the local effects of climate change, was presented to the entire conference on Saturday afternoon. The high level of participation by SIT alumni demonstrates the exceptional primary research being conducted at the undergraduate level by SIT Study Abroad students around the globe.
SIT Graduate Institute alumnus and faculty, Joseph Sebarenzi, delivered the conference’s keynote address. A former speaker of the Rwanda Parliament and a genocide survivor, Sebarenzi is a faculty member on SIT’s CONTACT program and the author of God Sleeps in Rwanda: A Journey of Transformation (Atria, 2009).
Also in attendance from SIT were Alyson Dagang, Ph.D. (Associate Academic Dean for Latin American and the Caribbean), Laurie Black (Dean for External Relations and Strategic Enrollment Management), Marianne Jorgensen (Director of University Relations), and Katherine Yngve (University Relations Manager, Midwest Region). In November 2008, SIT Study Abroad collaborated with Notre Dame on the university’s first annual student research conference focused on human development entitled "Innovation in the Service of Human Dignity".
