Organizations Urge Approval of Obama Administration’s International Funding Request

WASHINGTON, DC (March 17, 2010) -- World Learning is among 158 nongovernmental organizations that sent a letter to U.S. lawmakers this month urging them to approve the Obama administration's request for increased international affairs funding in fiscal year 2011. The funding is especially critical to the United States' efforts to improve child and maternal health, boost global engagement and promote peace.

"World Learning is pleased to see the Obama administration focus on building the capacity of institutions and individuals to take charge of their own development," said Carol Jenkins, World Learning senior vice president for international development programs. "Our own experience with these projects shows that they hold the key to solving critical issues such as HIV/AIDS, basic education and the marginalization of women and children."

The total international affairs budget request of $58.5 billion represents a 2.8 percent increase over fiscal year 2010 amounts, including this year's supplemental. The request represents less than 2 percent of the total federal budget.
