Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Download Training and Education Services Program Summary (PDF)

Increasingly viewed as an important tool in global economic development, improved English teaching capacity has become a priority at many levels. World Learning's support for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages includes domestic and international projects as well as short-term teacher training courses.

World Learning projects range from curriculum reform at the national level to smaller projects that focus on strengthening institutional capacity. For example, in Algeria, World Learning has worked with the Ministry of National Education to implement educational reform in English Language Teaching.  This has included developing teacher competency and student evaluation frameworks, creating middle and high school level curriculum, training teachers and national inspectors, and creating a national online teachers' and inspectors' forum.

In the US, World Learning has collaborated with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to help meet the need for more English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers in Massachusetts public schools. The project is helping elementary school teachers gain ESL endorsements on their licensure through a training and capacity building program that combines online and face-to-face components and also balances theory and practice to produce effective and licensed ESL teachers.

World Learning Training and Education Services (TES) also designs and delivers internationally-recognized short-term training courses for teachers.  Participants in some courses may earn Continuing Education Units or graduate credit through World Learning's SIT Graduate Institute. The list below is a representative sample of courses.

  • Teacher Training and Professional Development Institute
The Institute provides short-term face-to-face and online professional development courses and workshops for teachers. These courses are specially designed for teachers wishing to grow professionally into new areas, such as teacher training, teacher supervision, bilingual/sheltered education, and program development. New course offerings will also focus on education in an international development/NGO context.  Some courses are taught on the SIT Graduate Institute's campus in Brattleboro, Vermont; others are taught entirely on-line and can be taken from anywhere in the world.
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) K-12
This in-service teacher-training program is designed to build ESL teaching capacity in school districts by introducing K-12 classroom teachers to ESL theories and practice. Participants develop pedagogical skills through practice teaching and deepen their theoretical knowledge in ESL linguistics, second language acquisition and ESL pedagogy through a blended format of face-to-face and online training. Schools, districts and Departments of Education contract with World Learning to deliver ESL K-12 to their teachers at their own sites.
  • The International Diploma in Language Teaching Management (IDLTM)
Offered in partnership with University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (UK) and the University of Queensland (Australia), this post-graduate level training course is designed for managers of language teaching organizations. The course is delivered at the University of Queensland in Australia and International House Barcelona in Spain. Individuals may apply to either of these organizations for acceptance to the course. IDLTM may also be delivered to groups of 5 or more participants at other approved locations.
  • General Trainer Training Course
This practical course is designed for professionals interested in acquiring basic training skills. It focuses on topics such as adult learning theory, workshop design and delivery, the impact of culture on training, reflective practice, and observation and feedback.
  • Inquiry: A Collaborative Tool for Deepening Understanding and Planning Action
TES offers inquiry training for educators and other professionals to use in pairs or facilitated groups. The IDEA (Identify, Describe, Expand, Act) tool guides participants in developing new understanding of an identified issue and proposing concrete actions to address it based on that new understanding.  Participants can earn a certificate and/or graduate credit.
  • The SIT TESOL Certificate Course
This 130-hour intensive or extensive pre-service or in-service teacher-training program for English language teachers is delivered at over two dozen centers around the world including the USA, Central and South America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Individuals apply to an SIT TESOL Certificate Training Center for acceptance to the course.
  • The SIT Best Practices in TESOL Course
TES collaborates with local partners in countries such as Korea, Burma, Algeria and Afghanistan to develop and implement teacher training for English language teachers whose first language is not English. This work often supports government initiatives aimed at large-scale change in language pedagogy from the elementary school through university levels. The Best Practices in TESOL Course is offered at two levels: as a certificate-level course or as a six-month diploma course.
  • The Teaching English Language Learners in Content Classes Graduate Certificate (TELIC)
The TELIC certificate is designed to assist K-12 grade-level and content teachers in US and international schools to better integrate and support English Language Learners in their classes. The course employs a blended format of face-to-face and online training. Schools, districts and Departments of Education contract with SIT to deliver TELIC to their teachers at their own sites. (This program was formerly known as ACCESS: Actively Connecting Content, English, Students and Standards.)
