Education for Vulnerable Groups
World Learning recognizes the educational needs of a variety of vulnerable groups, including those affected by hunger, disease, and war. Children and youth are particularly vulnerable. While they have a profound capacity for resilience, threats to their well-being can have a lasting impact and may lead to cognitive difficulties, behavioral, social and emotional problems, as well as a general inability to engage with those around them.
World Learning believes in the power of youth to act as agents of change within both their own lives and the lives of those around them. Youth represent a dynamic demographic, and if provided appropriate opportunities to develop and exercise their livelihoods and leadership skills, young people can be agents of their own welfare as well as make significant contributions to their communities.
World Learning is committed to addressing the educational needs of vulnerable children and youth: those orphaned as a result of war or HIV/AIDS, those affected by hunger and disease, girls, and children compelled to work rather than attend school. World Learning’s programmatic approach includes supporting children in withdrawing from exploitative labor environments, accelerated and flexible learning opportunities for youth who have missed school, training teachers to work in situations of special need, and fostering practices to enable girls to excel in school.
World Learning offers flexible training modules for vocational programs, allowing students to earn educational qualifications and certifications at their own pace. Training is available to students with a range of experience in education, including non-literate and semi-literate students. World Learning also supports distance learning, mobile skills training teams, and the establishment of feeder vocational and skills training programs within primary and secondary schools to ensure that even students in remote rural areas are able to access vocational and skills training opportunities.
World Learning is a member of the EQUIP3 consortium. Together, these organizations work with out-of-school youth in more than 100 countries. EQUIP3 combines a variety of effective practices that can be adapted to country specific contexts.
