Civil Society and Governance
Women's and Minority Rights
World Learning works with communities, civil society organizations (CSOs), media, the private sector, elected bodies, and government institutions to better understand the social challenges women and minorities face. Equipped with an understanding of needs and desires expressed by women and minorities, World Learning provides the logistical, technical, training, and moral support necessary to present their views to those in power and fight for the transparent governance and recognition they deserve. World Learning promotes the advancement of women and minority group members as leaders across civil society, government, and business sectors.
World Learning programs have addressed issues including rights of women under family laws, increasing women's political representation and access to economic opportunities, land rights for ethnic minorities, interfaith relations, human trafficking, conflict transformation, access to education in minority languages, and girls education.
Program approaches typically include:
- research and awareness raising to increasing understanding of the issues;
- training for women and minority group members so that they can better advocate for their own interests;
- support for CSOs that represent women and minorities;
- engaging government institutions and elected leaders;
- and multi-stakeholder forums that allow women, minorities, and allies from civil society, media, government, and the private sector to develop cooperative approaches to rights protection.
