How to Apply for Aid
The Financial Aid application is a two step process:- Complete the 2008-2009 SIT Application for Financial Aid and send to SIT Financial Aid Office.
- Complete the FAFSA:
Visit the US Department of Education's website for instructions to complete the form electronically (be sure to select the 2008-2009 application).
Review of financial aid applications will begin after March 1 and after you have been accepted for admission.
When completing the FAFSA you will need SIT's Title IV Institution Code:
Title IV Institution Code = 008860
School for International Training
Note: Foreign income must be reported on the FAFSA regardless of your tax-filing status. Convert all amounts to US dollars.
Dates for Financial Aid:
If you are considering an SIT graduate program and wish to apply for financial aid, we recommend that you complete an application before you have been accepted for admission. A financial aid award will be calculated after you have been accepted into a program.
In order to be considered for the widest options of available aid, the financial aid office must receive all of your financial aid materials by March 1.
SIT continues to accept and review financial aid applications after the priority date.
Once you have been accepted to a graduate program, and your financial aid application has been completed, the financial aid office will review the file. All decisions will be made after the above priority date.
Federal Loans for US Citizens and Permanent Residents
In addition to the grants and scholarships offered by SIT, US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for a range of federal financial aid. The Federal Stafford Loan, the Federal Perkins Loan and the Federal Work Study Program are open to graduate students who meet established requirements.
Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized and Unsubsidized)
These loans are administered by SIT in cooperation with participating lenders. The subsidized loan is awarded based on need, as assessed by the "need analysis process." The interest of this loan is paid, or subsidized, by the federal government during the in-school, grace, and authorized deferment periods. Depending on the amount of eligibility, a graduate student may borrow up to $8,500 per academic year.
The amount of eligibility for the unsubsidized Stafford Loan is based on the cost of attendance minus your other financial aid. The combined total of subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans is limited to $20,500 per academic year for graduate students.
Federal Perkins Loan
Awarded based on need and amount of loan funds available. The typical range for loan is $1,000 - $2,000.
Graduate PLUS Loan and Private Education Loans
In addition to the Stafford and Perkins loans some students choose to borrow additional funds to assist with their expenses while in graduate school. In most cases the Graduate PLUS loan is a better choice for students.
Employment for US Citizens and Permanent Residents
SIT offers a Federal Work Study program that allows eligible students to earn part of their college costs through part-time employment in positions on the SIT campus or in a limited number of local community organizations.
Students with a work-study position generally work between 8 and 10 hours each week. The rate of pay for the 2003-2004 academic year is $7.50 per hour. Approximately 60% of students have a work position on campus.
Students can also earn the equivalent of room and board expenses by applying to be a Resident Advisor in the multicultural environment of the SIT dormitories. Resident Advisor applications are sent to students after they have been accepted. Decisions are made solely by the housing office.
