SIT Signs Student Exchange Agreement with Kingdom of Bhutan

Brattleboro, VT (MARCH 27, 2007) – The School for International Training (SIT) has signed a memorandum of collaboration with the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) formalizing a unique academic and intercultural partnership between the two institutions. Under the agreement, which is the first of its kind for a U.S. study abroad program, Sherubtse College of RUB will host SIT Study Abroad students and staff from the Tibetan and Himalayan Studies Program in an ongoing capacity. In return, SIT will use its network of 250 U.S. colleges and universities to enable Bhutanese students and academics to study and access professional development opportunities in the U.S.

The memorandum was signed between Dasho Zangley Dukpa, Vice Chancellor of RUB, and Adam Weinberg, Provost of SIT, on a recent visit Dr. Weinberg made to the Himalayan kingdom. Currently, 19 SIT students and 3 staff are in Bhutan where they are being hosted at RUB and studying Buddhism as well as government efforts to preserve traditional culture and values through the unique policy of Gross National Happiness.

"This is an exciting opportunity for learning and exchange across cultures," said Dr. Weinberg. "SIT wants to be a portal for RUB into U.S. Higher Education. As Bhutan opens up to the world, we see extraordinary opportunities for U.S. academics to contribute while also giving our students a first-hand learning opportunity to explore a fascinating country." Dr. Jagar Dorji, director of Sherubtse College, added, "With our students hosting them and interacting with each other, there is a lot to learn."
