Jack Powelson, 1920-2009
BRATTLEBORO, VT (January 11, 2009) -- John Powelson, known to us as Jack, and a life long friend of the Experiment and World Learning, died peacefully in hospice care on January 1, 2009, in Boulder Colorado.
His Scots mother, a widow with 3 children was a close friend of Leslie and Donald Watt (also Scots) as they were starting the Experiment in the early 1930s in Syracuse, NY. Jack, his older brother and sister participated in many of the early groups. They were great linguists and as soon as they were old enough they became group leaders. Their Experiment scholarships opened them to a wider world and pointed them to distinguished international careers. The 3 were always great supporters and promoters of the Experiment. Many of their children were also Experimenters. Jack was particularly close to the Watt family and the Experiment, serving as trustee and advisor throughout his long and productive life.
His obituary may be found on the New York Times and The Quaker Economist Web sites.
World Learning works globally to enhance the capacity and commitment of individuals, institutions, and communities to create a more peaceful and just world through education, training and exchange programs.
