Inaugural World Learning Forum to Feature Author of Monique and the Mango Rains

BRATTLEBORO, VT (June 15, 2007) - World Learning, in partnership with the award-winning Northshire Bookstore, is pleased to announce the launch of the World Learning Forum speaker series with a July 7 appearance by Kris Holloway, author of Monique and the Mango Rains: Two Years with a Midwife in Mali. The event is free and open to the public and will take place at the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, VT at 7pm.

The World Learning Forum is an occasional series of readings, lectures and provocative discussions addressing global issues and themes and our response to them. Speakers will include prominent authors, thinkers and activists concerned with our roles as global citizens in driving new awareness and lasting social change.

Monique and the Mango Rains is the true story of the life and death of a remarkable West African midwife, seen through the eyes of a young Peace Corps Volunteer who worked side-by-side with her, birthing babies and caring for mothers, in a remote, impoverished village. It is a rare tale of friendship that reaches beyond borders to vividly and irrevocably unite another woman’s world with our own.

Carol Bellamy, President and CEO of World Learning and former director of the Peace Corps, has written, "This funny, poignant book connects us immediately with women in a far-off land; their triumphs become ours, their struggles become ours...It is a tale of the potential of cross-cultural friendship and the power of intercultural exchange."

Future World Learning Forum events include Eric Reeves, Professor of English Language and Literature at Smith College and author of A Long Day’s Dying: Critical Moments in the Darfur Genocide, speaking on July 27, 7 pm at the Northshire Bookstore.
