Scotland

Program Overview

Fàilte ort a dh ’Albainn.
Welcome to Scotland.
Strap on the thick leather boots of a Scottish Highlander and explore rugged, breathtaking Scotland. Using the islands and highlands of Scotland as a backdrop, hike, kayak, canoe, and bike through this enchanting country. A land of medieval castles, mystical lochs, massive emerald hills, and ancient island cultures, Scotland welcomes you as an old friend.

Orientation in Glasgow
Your adventure begins in the bustling city of Glasgow. Scotland’s largest city is one of her most culturally vibrant and upbeat metropolitan areas. Home to music festivals, a mix of Art Nouveau and Victorian architecture, and world-renowned museums, contemporary Glasgow allows you to embrace Scotland’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. As you explore lively markets, ask locals for directions, and enjoy some fish and chips, listen carefully as your ear adjusts to the thick "Glaswegian" accent.

Islands and Highlands Adventure
Journey back in time to experience the dramatic beauty and relaxed pace of life on Scotland’s western islands. Each of the Hebridean islands off Scotland’s northwest shore offers a unique culture and landscape. From the islands, head for the hills! Hop a ferry across the dark blue waters to the impressive Scottish Highlands.

Sample activities: Hike, canoe, and explore the lovely Isle of Skye; stroll along hidden coves and rocky paths; learn Celtic culture at a Scottish ceilidh; camp out under the stars on a remote island; enjoy a day of kayaking or mountain biking at an outdoor activity center; visit the magnificent Stirling Castle and centuries-old villages; participate in a community conservation project.

Homestay
Become part of the family! For a week, experience the daily life of a Scottish family. Whether it’s a visit to the local market, a conversation over afternoon tea, or your first taste of haggis, you will be enchanted by your new connection to Scottish culture, family, and community.

Edinburgh City Stay
Listen to the rhythmic, magical sound of the bagpipes in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Your Scottish adventure comes to a close on the streets of Edinburgh. From the fairy-tale castle perched elegantly above a maze of narrow alleyways to the incredible galleries, shops, and museums, you and your group reflect on an amazing four weeks in Scotland.

"Here is my heartfelt yet deliciously simple reaction to the 30 days I spent in Scotland: it was, without a doubt, the best month of my life. I found there, in the ancient buildings; in the majestic rolling hills; in the clear, shimmering lochs; and most of all, in the fantastic new friendships, what seemed to be my calling. If I close my eyes, I can still feel my legs burning, the wind on my face, the grass beneath me, and the inherent wonder as I gaze eternally at that indescribable Scottish horizon."
