Senator Sanders Speaks to Governer's Institute Students as SIT

On July 5, 2007, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders visited with 60 students at SIT's annual Governor’s Institute for Current Issues and Youth Activism. Speaking about global warming, energy efficiency, globalization, and Iraq, Sanders engaged the group in a lively discussion of critical issues facing the state of Vermont and the world. Students asked tough questions about the shrinking middle class, the speed at which the government is passing energy reform bills, and when the war would end in Iraq – displaying extensive knowledge in recent policy and current events.

Sanders congratulated the group for being interested and active in politics, explaining that even though they might not be old enough to vote yet, their voice and opinions have an important role in the future of their country. He encouraged students to stay actively involved in issue debates, ask difficult questions of their teachers and peers, and avoid being cynical of politics.

The Governor's Institute, now in its 18th year, provides ambitious Vermont youth with an opportunity to examine the current issues, policy, and political questions facing young people today.
